Clues to Recognize Adults With Low Reading Skills
Here are Reasons adults come for help.
We aim to build strong, literate communities by fostering independence and creating opportunities through literacy.
"Adults with low literacy skills don’t respond to literature, especially if it is sent through the mail. Adults who can’t read well may say, “I can’t read this now because I forgot my glasses” or “I don’t have time to fill out this form today. Can I bring it back tomorrow?” They make excuses because they are embarrassed about their poor reading and writing skills.”
We train volunteers to use professionally developed methods of teaching basic reading and English language learners. Volunteers attend an online training course that includes meeting our staff in-person for an orientation session and a final session. The online training takes approximately six hours to complete. It includes videos and quizzes.
Our one-to-one tutoring is individualized and confidential. Staff does an extensive intake and assessment with each student.
Tutoring is done at a time and place convenient to both the tutor and the learner. We use libraries, churches, municipal buildings, and other public places for the tutoring sessions.
Illiteracy is often an inter-generational problem. We want to break this vicious cycle by reaching out to parents and other adults today. If you know any individuals whom you believe could benefit from our confidential and free literacy program, please ask them to call us at 315-782-4270. We assess every student, write up an individualized learning plan and provide the books and materials free of charge. Once learners are assessed, we provide them with a tutor. We periodically retest students to see what they have learned and what areas they still need to work on.
Literacy of Northern New York is a not-for-profit 501 (C) (3) organization that trains volunteers to work one-to-one with adults who need help with reading, writing, math and English language skills. Our one-to-one tutoring service is individualized and confidential. LNNY’s student-oriented program focuses on meeting the long-term and short-term goals of our clients.
Our staff assess the reading, math or English-speaking skills of our students. We periodically retest students to determine if they are making educational gain and to revisit goal setting.
We also give away hundreds of children’s books to impoverished families each year.
